Vijayapura: The effects of Cyclone ‘Nivar’ could be seen all over the Vijayapura district since early on Saturday morning. There was a drop in temperature and infrequent drizzles were also witnessed throughout the previous night.
The situation will continue to remain the same throughout Sunday and Monday, according to the Agricultural College’s Weather section.
Vijayapura residents were taken by surprise by the change in weather as they were met with slushy roads and dense fog on Saturday morning. Additionally, routine life was disrupted due to the change in weather. This was made clear by the seemingly deserted gardens which are otherwise filled with joggers in the morning.
Similarly, the Begum Talab had very few visitors on Saturday, when it usually manages to draw large crowds.
There were also fewer people on the cricket ground due to the rains and damp condition.
According to reports, similar situations were witnessed in all the taluks of the district. Officials from the Agricultural Department asked the people to look on the bright side as the drizzles would bring great results for the crops like Bengal gram, jawar and maize, which are yet to be harvested.
“The rains adds moisture, which is good for the standing crop,” the officials said. Also, they stated that the rains would not bring any harm to the standing toor crop as the plants had already progressed through the flowering stage.
“Had it been in the flowering stage, the rains would have had an adverse impact and would have caused a pest problem. The rains will not have much impact on the crops, unless the situation continues for too many days,” the officials said.
The vegetable market also saw a drop in customers due to the low temperatures and difficuly in travelling on the roads due to the sludge.
