Vijayapura: Teachers and parents have welcomed the government’s decision to keep SSLC and PU colleges closed till the end of December, considering the current COVID-19 situation.

A majority of the people have opined that the health of the students is more important than attending classes physically, but there are some who believe that the government should have started schools and colleges by ensuring that the students and institutions follow strict guidelines to prevent the spread of the disease.

MLA Arun Shahapur, defending the government, said that the decision was taken only after consultation with all stakeholders including parents, teachers, students, and experts, and by keeping the health of the students in mind.

“It is not appropriate to open schools and colleges in such situations when the disease can spread among students. The government considered this crucial aspect and decided to keep the PU colleges and schools closed; at least till the end of this year. Further decisions will be taken depending on the situation,” he said.

Mohammed Munaf Kazi, a parent whose daughter is studying in SSLC this year, welcomes the government’s decision stating that academic activities are not more important than health.

Speaking further, he opined that the government should announce this academic year as ‘zero year’ and that the students should be promoted based on the previous marks.

Another parent, Shivanand Biradar opined that the government has taken the right decision. “There is no doubt taht the delay in opening of schools will put an academic burden on teachers and students. Parents are also worried about the academic progress of their children, but they are more worried about their health. According to me, classes should not be started till vaccine is rolled out,” he said.

It can be recalled that the state government announced on Monday, that state schools and PU colleges would not be opened before the end of December and that another meeting would be called in the last week of December to decide further steps.
