Vijayapura: Attacking Congress leader DK Shivakumar, Babaleshwar MLA MB Patil, who is also leading the Lingayat religion fight has said that DKShi need not interfere in the Lingayat religious tag issue.

“The opinion that DKShi has expressed is not the stand of the party. It seems to be his personal opinion. I will take up the issue of interference of DKShi in all the issues at the state levels with the party leadership, ” he said adding that the Lingayat issue has not harmed the Congress in any way.

Patil said that if the Congress has lost in Lingayat dominant areas, then there are reasons which the party must introspect.

Shivakumar, while speaking at the Dussehra Sammelan of the Rambhapuri seer, Veer Someshwara Shivarcharya Swami, in Gadag district had sought “forgiveness” from the people of Karnataka for his party interfering in religious matters and said that no political party must interfere or try to make politics out of religion. Referring to the Lingayat issue he said that his party has committed a mistake and the Assembly poll results hinted that Lingayat religion issue was a blunder.

While the Shivakumar issue is heating up, the minister has got support from none other than Akhila Bharath Lingayat Veerashaiva Mahasabha President Shamanuru Shivashankarappa.

He has said that he agrees with what DKShi has said and that Lingayats and the Veerashaivas have to stay as one.

In a press meet in Davangere, he said that MB Patil and Vinay Kulkarni should refrain from raking up the issue.

“Patil has the money and his words are more of arrogance than concern. The two must not resort to breaking the community, ” he said adding that former CM recommended for separate religion based on what Patil and Kulkarni told him.

“We must encourage unity between the two communities because they are the same. We must encourage marital alliances between the youth from two communities. That is the way ahead. We have to tread the path shown by Basavanna, ” he said.

Meanwhile, Rashtriya Basava Sene members staged a stir in Vijayapura against Shivakumar on Friday against his statement.

The activists burnt the portrait of the minister.

Sene district president Dr Ravi Kumar Biradar said that the Congress government, which supported the Lingayat religion during its last term has suddenly taken U-turn in a coalition government. “Shivakumar seeking an apology in itself is a mistake,” he said adding that the entire community opposes what Shivakumar has said.
