Vijayapura: In the wake of the second wave of Covid pandemic in Karnataka and higher number of Covid cases getting reported in the bordering state of Maharashtra, the government has decided to completely ban Holi festivals scheduled to be celebrated between March 28 and 31.

In a release, the government has issued direction to all the district administrations of the State to ensure the strict following of the order.

The release said that after the State recording the second wave of Covid and substantial increase in cases of Covid in Maharashtra everyday, the government is forced to take some tough actions to prevent the spread of Covid.

Stating that the government has already made it mandatory to wear masks in public places and maintain social distancing, the ban is put in place as this norm may be difficult to implement for the festival of Holi where people will have to paint each other with colour, physically. This could increase the possibility of spreading of virus as the government is already fighting extensively to control the spread.

The decision has been taken to ban the festival under the Disaster Management Act of 1897 which allows the government to ban any public gathering in the interest of public safety. The government has banned the celebration of Holi festival across the State which is celebrated for four days.

Direction has been issued to District Administration, Police, Health and other departments concerned to ensure the adhering of the guidelines during the festival.

The order has also appealed to the people to cooperate with the government. Action would be taken against those who are found to be violating the order, the release added.
