Belagavi: Activists of the Shiv Sena on Thursday, carried out a protest in the district against the hoisting of the Karnataka flag in front of the corporation building.

During the protest, demands were made that the Karnataka flag be taken down from the Belagavi City Corporation building.

TNIE reports that the agitation was carried out by several pro-Maharashtra outfits including the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES) and members of the Shiv Sena from Kolhapur.

Meanwhile, according to a report by UNI, prohibitory orders under Section 35 of the Karnataka Police Act have been clamped in order to prohibit members of the Shiv Sena from entering the city to take down the flag and maintain law and order.

It can be recalled that protests were sparked in the region after pro-Kannada groups hoisted the Karnataka flag in front of the corporation a few weeks ago.

Tensions in the region once again picked up after the Karnataka Government decided to set up a development body for the Maratha community. Most recently, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray kicked up another storm by tweeting, “Bringing back all the Marathi-speaking and culturally Maharashtrian areas that have been occupied by Karnataka back into Maharashtra is the only tribute to those who have attained martyrdom in the border dispute fight. We are united and committed to this cause. We bow down to the martyrs with this promise.”

Leaders from across all political parties in Karnataka slammed the Maharashtra CM for his statement and protests were staged in Belagavi where his effigy and photos were burned.
