Belagavi: A meeting with Belagavi, Bagalkot and Vijayapur MLAs was held under the leadership of State Water Resource Minister D K Shivakumar, here on Monday, May 6, regarding the release of water from Koyna Dam of Maharashtra to River Krishna.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, DKShi said that the state Congress and Janata Dal (S) coalition government had accepted the Maharashtra government’s stand of “‘water for water.”

He said, “Once the election model code of conduct is revoked on May 29, a clear framework regarding the MoU between our state coalition government and Maharashtra government will be made. Until then, we have requested their government to release water with immediate effect to River Krishna.”

DKShi said, “We have always requested the Maharashtra government to release water from the Koyna Dam to River Krishna by paying them money. In the year 2004, we had paid Rs 2.12 Crore, in 2009 Rs 6.63 Crore and in 2014 Rs 2.84 Crore.”

“Now they have changed the policy and said instead of money we want water for water”, he added.

He said that as people of both the states were dependent on the water from River Krishna, Karnataka state was promised of 4 TMC (2 TMC each in first and second phase) for which the state coalition government has agreed.

Meanwhile, DKShi said, “Our government has already written an acceptance letter to their government through our government’s Chief Secretary.”
