Belagavi: Amid people who spend lakhs and sometimes crores of rupees on wedding, here is a couple from Belagavi who stood apart by getting wedded the ‘Satyashodhak’ way. ‘Satyashodhak Samaj’ (Society of Seekers of Truth) was formed by social activist Jyotirao Phule in the 18th century.

Geetha Balakrishna Bedaka from Basavan Kudchi in Belagavi entered into a wedlock with Mayur Hanumanth Nagenhatti of Belgundi village, on Saturday, April 27 in a simple ceremony skipping all traditions, rituals, religious formalities and also without a priest. The couple during the wedding ceremony have vowed to work towards the abolition of superstitions and strive for a harmonious society.

Jyotirao Phule who fought against child marriage and the ‘Sati’ system in the 18th century, formed the ‘Satyashodhak Samaj’ and introduced a new concept of marriage. Influenced by Jyotirao Phule’s concept of marriage, Geetha and Mayur tied the knot in their own simple way.

The close relatives and friends of the couple participated in the wedding. Both Geetha and Mayur are lecturers.

“I decided to get married in the ‘Satyashodhak’ way, inspired by IRS officer Akash Chougule of our village did the same, few years ago. When I discussed this idea with Geeta, she agreed. Our families initially rejected the idea but we convinced them,” said Mayur.
