Ban on New Year’s eve parties at public places in state: R Ashoka

ashoka ban 05122020Belagavi: State revenue minister R Ashoka on Saturday, informed that this year, there will be a ban on all New Year’s eve celebrations at public places across Karnataka owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking to reporters here on Saturday, the minister said that people can celebrate the new year in their own homes and that hotels can allow celebrations at 50 per cent capacity, as per the Covid-19 guidelines issued by the government.

Ashoka added that Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and he held talks with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa regarding the issue and orders in this regard will be issued soon.

It can be taken recalled that the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for COVID-19 in the state indicated the possibility of a second wave of the pandemic during January-February. It recommended that new year public celebrations be banned in the last two weeks of this December till January 1 and to impose night curfew in this period.

Ashoka stated that as people gather in large numbers at public places for New Year’s eve celebrations, it gets “difficult to maintain social distance and Covid-19 protocol cannot be followed”. “We want to contain the second wave of Covid-19 in the state. That is why it has been decided to ban the celebrations across the state,” he added.
