Belagavi: The Anganwadis in the district remained shut as thousands of their workers staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office here on Tuesday, July 10.

The Karnataka State Anganwadi Employees’ Association affiliated to the CITU, had called for a statewide protest demanding various benefits and facilities for the Anganwadi workers in the state.

The protesting Anganwadi workers complained that in addition to their regular work every day, they are forced to work on other duties such as elections, surveys, Bhagyalaxmi, Strishakti, schemes for the disabled, Matrupoorna scheme and so on. Even after working beyond the stipulated work, the workers are harassed by the higher officials for silly things, they complained.

The protesters also demanded upgradradation of the mini-Anganwadi centres into complete centres. They further demanded payment of honorary monthly remuneration, promotion to supervisor’s post based on seniority, stopping LKG/UKG classes at government schools among other things.

Workers withdrew the protest by submitting the memorandum to DC S Ziaullah and in-charge of Child Welfare Department.
