Belagavi: Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairman Balachandra Jarkiholi on Wednesday, informed of plans to include around 12 lakh cattle under insurance cover in order to give a boost to the dairy industry in the state.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the 67th All India Cooperative Week.

The KMF is collecting around 89 lakh litres of milk every day. This shows that the farmers have a lot of faith in the KMF, he said, adding that in India’s dairy sector, Amul and KMF are doing well and will become stronger in the future.

Stating that the annual turnover of the KMF is around Rs 15,000 crores, he added that this will increase to Rs 25,000 crores soon, as the KMF has set a target for the same.

“If the Belagavi district is able to produce 4-5 lakh litres in a day, we can establish a mega dairy here,” he said.

Cooperative Minister S. T. Somashekhar, who spoke earlier, said that the government has ensured the disbursement of Rs 15,300 crores in loans to farmers through the DCC banks in the state.

The Central Government has been urged to provide Rs 630 crores to the state under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme’, which will be used to help small and medium enterprises who have suffered losses during the COVID lockdown.

Regarding Jarkiholi’s wish to set up a mega dairy in Belagavi, the Minister said that he would support the same and hoped that it will provide employment to hundreds of locals.

Women and Child Welfare Minister Shahikala Jolle, Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan and other leaders were also present.
