plus sizeBengaluru: Making a bold statement against body-shaming, women of all sizes participated in the grand finale of the Mrs. Karnataka International Beauty Pageant 2019 held in the city, on Friday, October 11.

The event witnessed over 14 women walk the ramp in a brave display of confidence and inner beauty. The unique beauty pageant was the brainchild of social worker Dr. Asha Kiran who wants to dispel the notion that women have to be size-zero models to take part in such competitions.

Speaking to New Indian Express, Dr. Kiran said, “If you are dark or thin, you have been body-shamed. I want to ask, why this bifurcation? For me, a woman is a woman, the Shakti originates from her. There are contestants who weigh more than 105 kg and are 4.5 or 5.11 inches tall. Here, everyone is showing equality among themselves.”

Further elaborating on the concept behind the pageant, show director Faheem Raja said, “It is a unique concept which is against body shaming. If you look at the contestants, they all have their unique personalities and this is the platform to show the best of themselves as a human. The event was conducted to raise everyone’s confidence.”

One of the judges, RJ Aakanksha Saxena, lauded the organisers for undertaking such a one-of-a-kind initiative. “Love yourself and your body, and in the end, it’s all about you and yourself,” she added.

Philanthropist Shabnam Hajira was awarded the title of Mrs. Karnataka International. The first and second runners-up of the contest were Raksha Shinde and Sapna Savant respectively.
