Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has signed a partnership agreement with a French company to set up a waste-to-energy plant. The agreement was signed in Delhi on Saturday during French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to India.

The plant, which is likely to come up at Chikkanagamangala, will have the capacity to process 500 tonnes of waste a day, generate 10 MW of power, and is likely to be commissioned within eight months.

BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad said the civic body would not have to pay any tipping fee.

“We will only have to send mixed waste to the plant where it will be segregated. While wet waste will be composted, the dry waste and rejects will be used to generate power.” There will be an off-take agreement with the Agriculture Department for sale of compost at the rate of Rs. 2,500 a tonne, plus government subsidy of Rs. 800 a tonne.

The BBMP had partnered with a company from the Netherlands for a waste-to-energy plant at Bellahalli.
