Underground water contaminated in all districts of State: Report

UG MBengaluru: Underground water contamination is threatening three bigs states of the country and Karnataka is one of them-the rest two being Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

As far as Karnataka is concerned, all the 30 districts in the state have shown fluoride and nitrate presence, which means the people who are consuming this water are vulnerable to diseases like fluorosis and cancer.

The data from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation that was tabled in Lok Sabha on Thursday showed that water quality is deteriorating rapidly as the number of districts affected by arsenic has gone up from two to five in the last one year.

Shockingly, water-rich Mandya has joined the list along with Chikkaballapur, Dharwad, Kalaburagi and Kolar where arsenic in groundwater samples exceeded the permissible limit of 0.01 mg per litre, reported DHNS adding that barring Udupi district, all other districts have shown the presence of fluoride beyond the permissible limit, which can affect teeth and bones.

Iron contamination has been seen in groundwater samples drawn from 28 districts, which is a clear indication of overexploitation and improper management of industrial effluents. As many as 5,881 water samples in the 30 districts contained nitrates above the permissible limit of 45 mg per litre.

The main reason for groundwater contamination is a sharp increase in the use of chemical fertilizers.
