UGC nod to 4 K’taka varsities gives access to online degree courses

Bengaluru: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved full-fledged online degree programmes in 38 universities across India. These higher educational institutions are entitled to start full-fledged online programmes without prior approval of the UGC. In Karnataka, 4 universities have got UGC nod for online courses.

Among the four in State, two are state universities namely Kuvempu University, Shivamogga and Mysore University, Mysuru and two deemed-to-be-university Jain and Yenepoya have been approved by the UGC to offer online degree programmes.

Speaking to News Karnataka, Kuvempu University Vice-Chancellor of Prof. B. P. Veerabhadrappa has informed that Covid 19 has adversely affected higher education, but it also has opened new opportunities in online and distance education. Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Science (Mathematics), Master of Business Administration, Master of Commerce, Master of Arts (Sociology), Master of Arts (History & Archaeology), Master of Arts (Political Science), Master of Arts (Economics), Master of Arts (English), and Master of Arts (Kannada) these courses will be streamed online,” he informed.

Meanwhile, Prof. R Shivappa registrar of Mysore University said, ” We are providing online graduation and post-graduation programmes from the past several years. Even this year we have got the approval for the same by UGC. The following are courses that will be provided by the University. Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Computer Applications, Master of Commerce, Master of Computer Applications, Master of Business Administration (Supply Chain Management), Master of Business Administration (Operations), Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management), Master of Business Administration (Finance), Master of Business Administration (Dual), Master of Business Administration (Marketing), and Master of Business Administration. The details of admission and other procedures with regard to these online courses will be uploaded on the university website, he informed.

Similarly, Jain (Deemed-to-be University) will offer Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Business Administration,  Master of Arts (Economics), Master of Commerce, Master of Arts (English), Master of Arts (Public Policy), Master of Arts (Journalism & Mass Communication), Master of Computer Applications, and Master of Business Administration courses online.

Dr Shareena P, Director of Centre for Distance and Online Education informed that Yenepoya (Deemed-to-be University) for the first time got approval to start a full-fledged online education programme. The Bachelor of Commerce is the first full-fledged course through online mode. Any candidate who has completed PU from any stream can apply for this course. Admission will be starting in July 2021. All the details will be updated on the official website of Yenepoya (Deemed-to-be University), “she said. “Next year we will be starting many other courses,” she added.

UGC had earlier invited applications from higher education institutions willing to offer online programmes for the academic session 2020-21. 

“Online applications had been invited from all entitled HEls willing to offer programmes under online mode for the year 2020-21. Each HEI was required to submit an affidavit for ensuring compliance to all the provisions of the University Grants Commission (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020,” the UGC statement said.
