Bengaluru: Congress leader Siddaramaiah, on Wednesday, urged Assembly Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri to extend the monsoon session till October 15. He argued that eight days is not enough to discuss the important issues.
It can be noted that the monsoon session of the state legislature is scheduled to begin on September 21 and end on September 30. During this time, it will have business for eight days.
In a letter to the Speaker, Siddaramaiah, who is the Leader of the Opposition in the state Legislative Assembly, wrote that as per the information he received, there are “over 20 Ordinances and over 35 Bills are being laid”.
“The state’s people are stuck in an unprecedented situation with recurring floods and the Covid-19 pandemic because of which more than 6,500 people have died. The state is also under the shadow of the dangerous drug activities,” the former Karnataka chief minister wrote.

Stating that the session looks like it is being held just for “namesake” without much concern for the people, he argued, “The duration of the session will not be enough.” He also cited the Karnataka Conduct of Government Business in the State Legislature Act, 2005, which stipulates that the House should be in session for 60 days in a year or more.
“15 days in January, 20 in March, 15 in July and 15 in November…it should for a minimum 60 days every year, with each session lasting ten days,” he wrote and accused the BJP government in the state of vitiating the Parliamentary system.
