Bengaluru: The Karnataka Legislative Council, during the second day of the ongoing joint session of the Assembly and Council, witnessed a hot debate over the Mangaluru police firing row.
On February 18, Opposition leader of the Legislative Council S R Patil placed his argument before the House slamming the state government saying that it had shown irresponsibility by withdrawing the compensation allotted to two persons who died in the Mangaluru police firing incident on December 19, 2019, in the violence that broke out during the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) protest.
MLC Ivan D’Souza claimed that Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary had not met the victims’ families even once. As a counter to this, the minister said that it was Ivan who stopped him from visiting the victims’ families and saying that there was no necessity to meet them.
Meanwhile, BJP MLC Ravikumar asked whether there was a need to go and meet the family members of ‘terrorists’.
Enraged by this, Congress leaders, C M Ibrahim, H M Revanna and Ivan D’Souza slammed the BJP leaders and both the party leaders entered the Well of the House.
As the situation turned chaotic, Karnataka Legislative Speaker Prathapchandra Shetty adjourned the House proceedings for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, DCM Laxman Savadi took the oath as a newly elected MLC.
