Bengaluru: A retired professor of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (Nimhans) was arrested on Monday for shooting at a stray dog with an air gun outside his home in Jayanagar.
This first-of-its-kind incident took place at about 8.45 AM on Monday. The accused, identified as Shyam Sundar (83), a retired Professor shot three pellets at the dog for allegedly dirtying the outside of his house located in Jayanagar 5th Block.
Animal Rights activists of the ‘We Save All’ organisation had rushed the bleeding dog to a pet clinic in J P Nagar.
A detailed diagnosis and X-ray revealed three rubber pellets inside the dog’s abdomen.
Jayanagar police inspector Nanjegowda S told DH that Sundar was booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960, section 11 (treating animals cruelly) and 12 (action upon the report of the Advisory Board). He was arrested and later released on bail as it is a bailable offence.
The dog is said to be battling for its life as a large portion of its abdomen was damaged by the pellets. The doctors had to operate the dog to extract the pellets. Sources say that though the bleeding has stopped, the dog is paralysed.
Sowmya Reddy, Jayanagar MLA, who lives close to the spot, visited the hospital soon after the incident.
