Mangaluru: In order to check the spread of coronavirus and to keep the Eid celebrations simple as a mark of solidarity with poor whose livelihood is hit hard by the current crisis, a majority of shopkeepers belonging to Muslim community have decided to refrain from opening garments, fancy and footwear shops in Mangaluru and other parts of the district.

It is because, leaders from Muslim religion have appealed to their community members to join hands with the fight against Covid-19.

Dakshina Kannada district Khazi Al-haj Shaikhuna Thwaka Ahmed Ali Azhuri Ustad has already appealed to the Muslim community members to pray at their homes on Eid day in order to protect the people from coronavirus.

While shopkeers and entrepreneurs have decided to keep their business set ups shut on Eid day, Khazi had also urged people to refrain from buying new clothes and instead utilise the same money to help the poor, irrespective of caste, creed and religion.

It is estimated that nearly 60 per cent of garments and footwear shops in Dakshina Kannada district are owned by Muslims and 95 per cent of them are shut now.

Opening of these shops would obviously lead to a rush of Eid shoppers where ensuring social distancing will be very tough.

This comes as a major move by the community members to prevent the spread of the COVID-19.
