Bengaluru: Farmers’ organisations across the state took to the streets to protest against the Karnataka Government’s farm Bills, land reform ordinances, and amendments to the APMC and labour laws on Monday, September 28. The bandh evoked good response in Northern parts and central Karnataka, while the coastal belt and Old Mysuru region evoked poor response.

In Madikeri of the Kodagu district, ANI reported that police detained workers of the Congress, JD(S), and Socialist Democratic Party of India as their protest against the government intensified.

According to ANI, in Shivamogga, SDPI, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, JD(S), Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, and others formed a human chain at the Ashoka Circle in protest against the state government. JD(S) workers took out a bike rally in the district, however, they were stopped by the cops at the Lakshmi Theater circle. Despite the bandh call, normal traffic movement was witnessed in the district.

In Hubballi, protesters sat on a road in a bid to stop a bus amid statewide bandh. Some farmers’ organisations also offered flowers to shopkeepers while requesting them to support the statewide bandh.

In Hassan, the All India Kisan Sabha and other organisations protested in front of Hemavathi statue and held a bike rally.

Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, and other organisations staged a protest against the state government in front of Sir Puttanna Chetty Town Hall. The Karnataka Congress protested against the government at the party office in the presence of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president D K Shivakumar, state in-charge Randeep Surjewala and Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah.

Police were deployed in Kalaburagi in the wake of a statewide bandh in order to maintain law and order.

The protests come after the Karnataka Assembly passed two important amendments to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act despite strong objection by the Opposition parties, mainly the Congress and JD(S), as well as the farmers.
