Bengaluru: It seems that the Union Government, much like most of the netizens, is red faced about a tweet posted by Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya. Reportedly, the Centre submitted a list of over a hundred tweets posted by various it wanted taken down. The list included a tweet by the MP on Islam.

The Wire reported that the Including results for Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MoEIT) had requested Surya’s tweet, which stated that most terrorists are from the Muslim community.

The tweet continued, “In short: true, terror has no religion. But the terrorist definitely has a religion, and in most cases it’s Islam.”

According to a report by TNM, the Union Government’s request was filed on April 28 this year citing section 69A of the Information Technology Act as the reason. This section mentions that the Central Government or an officer authorized by it may block public access to information on a computer resource, by directing any agency of government or intermediary.

On the list submitted by the Government were several tweets by right-wing handles and pro-Pakistan handles.

It can be recalled that MP Surya has been facing a lot of backlash for his tweets on Islam, the Muslim community and Arab women, the last of which has caused outrage in the Arab world with even members of the royal families speaking out against him.

According to TNM, BJP sources say that the party’s national president J P Nadda has been unhappy ever since Surya’s tweet about Arab women from 2015 sparked a row.

In the now-deleted tweet, Surya had written, “95% Arab women have never had an orgasm in the last few hundred years! Every mother has produced kids as act of sex and not love:@TarekFatah”

While Surya had argued that the tweet was just a direct quote from Tarak Fatah, who is known for his anti-Islam comments.

Unfortunately for Surya, however, someone had already archived the tweet, along with the various reactions to it. Responding to Congress member Srivatsa in the thread, Surya explains that the opinion is Tareh Fatah and not his, however, he says that he agrees with the stand.
