Bengaluru: Congress leaders CM Ibrahim has written to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa asking him to allow Eid-ul-Fitr prayers to be held in mosques and the Idgah Maidans.

It can be recalled that since the lockdown was imposed on the country to curb the spread of COVID-19, gatherings of any sort, including for religious purposes, have been banned.

MLC and former union minister Ibrahim, in his letter to the CM, suggested that the government, after consultations with medical experts, make a decision to permit Muslims to offer prayers in the Idgah Maidan on Masjids.

“On behalf of the entire community, I would suggest that the government may take a decision by having due consultation with the medical experts to grant permission for Muslims on the day of Eid to offer prayers in the Idgah Maidan or Masjids from morning till 1 pm with all precautionary measures and safety norms,” the MLC’s letter to the CM stated.

Eid is likely to be celebrated on May 24 or 25 this year, depending on the first sighting of the moon.

Now, the Congress leader’s letter has drawn flak on social media. Many have lambasted the leaders for putting public health at risk by seeking permission to gather for prayers during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Many others have accused the MLC of trying to play petty politics and endangering the lives of the Muslims in the state.
