Bengaluru: Karnataka government yielded to Akshaya Patra Foundation’s decision of not using onion and garlic in the midday meals served to school children of the state.
In November last year, the Department of Primary and Secondary Education had directed the foundation to introduce onion and garlic in the midday meals.
When the Foundation refused, the CEO of the Bengaluru Zilla Panchayat put the MOU on hold which was to be signed in April 2018.
The government could not find any alternative arrangements to provide food and had to agree to the Foundation’s stand.
Akshaya Patra Foundation is the subsidiary of International Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) which provides meals to over 1.76 million children in 15,024 schools across 12 states in India.
