DCM Laxman Savadi to have smooth sail in MLC election today?

Bengaluru: The election for the only Member of Legislative Council seat that will be held today, Februry 17 is going to be a cakewalk for Deputy CM Laxman Savadi as there are all possibilities of him being elected unanimously.

It may be recalled that JDS-sponsored MLC candidate Anil Kumar resigned from contesting the polls on Saturday, making the path clear for Savadi.

It is a do or die situation for Savadi, who has to get elected to the Council before February 19 if he wants to continue in the post of DCM.

However, sources say that an election will be held anyway as the last date to withdraw the nominations was on February 10 and Anil Kumar had missed that deadline.

It may be recalled that Savadi had lost the by-polls held in 2019 and was yet inducted as the DCM by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

With this, he had six months in hand to get elected to either of the houses- the assembly or the council.

It is said that the BJP Legislature Party met on Sunday evening and discussed at length the strategy to ensure Savadi’s election as an MLC.

The party’s 117 MLAs have been told to be present to defeat any opposition plan to get its independent nominee Anil Kumar chosen.

BJP sources said that Savadi will sail through the election without any glitches.

Yediyurappa has instructed all the legislators to be present for voting by 9.00 am and to finish voting by 10.45 am to participate in the legislative session after that.

Right from the begining, JDS supporting Anil Kumar seemed like a plan gone awry. The opposition itself lacked unity on Kumar’s candidature, it is said.
