Bengaluru/Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has written to his Karnataka counterpart B S Yediyurappa, requesting him to reopen the schools that were closed recently and to fill vacancies of Tamil teachers in the government and aided schools in Karnataka.

In the letter written to CM BSY on Thursday, Palaniswami informed that representatives of the Karnataka Tamil School and College Teachers’ Association approached him and spoke to him about the vacancies of Tamil teachers in government and government-aided schools. He added that they also informed him about the fact that the Karnataka Government had not given approval for the opening of new private Tamil schools.

“The Karnataka Government has started many Tamil Schools in various districts over the years to enable Tamil students to study in their mother tongue. Karnataka Government has granted approval as well as provided grants to the private Tamil Schools.

In this connection, we have received a representation from the Karnataka Tamil School and College Teachers Association, indicating that there are many vacancies of Tamil teachers in Government and Government Aided Schools and that the State Government has also not given approval for opening new private Tamil Schools. I enclose a copy of the representation for your kind perusal,” Palaniswami stated in the letter.

Urging CM BSY to “kindly take immediate action to protect the interest of Tamil-speaking people”, Palanaswami requested him to grant recognition or permission to open new Tamil medium private schools and restore those Tamil schools which were converted into other language schools.

Pointing out to the contributions of the people of Tamil Nadu to the all-round economic development of Karnataka, Palanaswami wrote, “…Tamils made immense contribution in developing Kolar Gold Mines, Hutti Gold Mines, Sandur Manganese Mines and coffee estates in Chikmagalur and Mangalore. They have also been playing a major role in construction and agriculture sectors in Karnataka.”

Just last month, the Tamil Nadu had written to Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani requesting that he look into the closure of a Tamil medium school in Ahmedabad. Palaniswami has even offered to bear the expenses of running the school for the children of migrant labourers.
