Bengaluru: A large number of parents gathered in front of Presidency School protesting against the management for collecting fees from the students on Tuesday June 8.

On Wednesday June 9 a meeting was held to discuss this issue.

Speaking to News Karnataka, Praveen Swamy, General Secretary of the Parents’ Association has informed that 51 parents have filed the complaint. There are more than 600 parents who are against the collection of additional tuition fees.

“In the meeting, DDPI and Block Education Officer, 60 parents of students, lawyer, and management committee members of the school were present. At the meeting, the BEO stated that it was an NCPCR violation. No child should be denied education. We have issued the notice from the NCPCR Department to conduct an enquiry against the school. The school management have not stated anything about their further step in this regard at the meeting, ” Praveen Swamy informed.

“BEO at the meeting has ordered to unblock the online student portal to all the students and permit them to get online education,” he added.

In all 57 parents of Bengaluru Nandini Layout Presidency School have lodged a complaint about denying access to their children to the online student portal on June 8. In response to this, BEO has issued a notice to the Principal stating to give an explanation regarding this within 3 days or they will take necessary disciplinary action against the institution.

Praveen Kotian, parent of a student studying in Presidency School, Nandini Layout branch Bangalore – 96, has even lodged a complaint in KCPCR on June 7 as his son’s Report Card has been withheld. Access to the student portal is deactivated. Online class for the bridge course or new academic year 2021-22 too has been denied. Thus, he said that the school has violated the fundamental right to education, by denying access to class. It is like making the child stand out of the class, which is physical or mental harassment, causing severe trauma to the child. It amounts to capital punishment which is banned and he requested KCPCR to ensure that the school provides the necessary link for the child to join the class and take suitable action against the school.

He demanded to ensure that the school provides the necessary link for the child to join the class. Take suitable action against the school for denying children their right to education. Do whatever is necessary in the interest of children and in the interest of justice and equity in the complaint.

The Court has passed interim orders on 09 March 2021 directing the State authorities not to take coercive steps for non-adherence of the directions given by the State Government with respect to educational institutions affiliated to ICSE and CBSE Boards. The court also has added that the petitioner Institutions are required to consider the grievance of the parents which is a genuine concern in the light of the COVID – 19 pandemic, which has affected the citizens of this country and caused severe damage to their livelihood and consequently, the income of the family.

The educational institutions should rise to the occasion. Therefore, while directing the respondent-Authorities not to take coercive steps, this Court would also implore upon the management of the Institutions affiliated to the ICSE/CBSE/International Educational Boards and the petitioners’ Association to voluntarily issue notices on their notice Boards that they would consider individual grievances of the parents and the Institution. And shall not insist upon the payment of full school fees in the light of the genuine grievances raised by the parents. The grievance of the parents in the matter of payment of school fees should be considered on a case-by-case basis.
