Bengaluru: A BBMP team, led by Bengaluru Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun, started cracking down on various places that sold plastic carry bags, boxes, covers, packaging materials and other items on Monday, July 15.

In the drive carried out simultaneously in Yeshwanthpur APMC yard, Vijayanagar Market, Rajarajeshwari Nagar, Peenya Industrial Area Market, Jayanagar, Russel Market, KR Market and Shivajinagar, some establishments were slapped with a notice, while some commercial establishments had their trade licenses cancelled.

During the raid, the teams seized plastic items including bags, plates, spoons and packaging materials. They also spread awareness among the shopkeepers and customers about the plastic ban.

Speaking to reporters during the raid, the Mayor said that this was being done to sensitise people about the hazards of plastic and the rules of the plastic ban.

She informed that so far, fines have not been imposed but in the coming weeks, they will be issued against those using plastic.

Deputy Mayor Bhadre Gowda added that these raids are just the first step and next, packing points and factories will be checked. He said that people have a month’s time to adhere to the plastic ban.

According to BBMP Special Commissioner (Finance) Randeep R, soon the BBMP will start checking where goods are packaged and then sold to retailers.

The shopkeepers and vendors have, however, questioned why the BBMP has not taken any action against the manufacturers of plastic. They claim that since the government wants revenue, retailers are soft targets.
