Bengaluru: Basavaraj Somappa Bommai has been elected as the 30th Chief Minister of the State by the BJP Legislature party on Tuesday July 27 in the presence of central observers and the State in-charge.
His name was proposed in the core committee meeting and the official announcement was made by caretaker Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa and seconded by former Deputy CM Govind Karjol in the BJP legislative meeting. Bommai was a unanimous choice. He is a loyal party worker and a close aide of BS Yediyurappa.
He is likely to meet Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot tonight. He will take oath on Wednesday July 28 at 11 am as a new CM of Karnataka.
Basavaraj Bommai joined the BJP in 2008 and has risen in the party ranks since then. He was last serving as the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Legislature of Karnataka. He was also the In-charge Minister of Haveri District and Udupi.
His father S. R. Bommai was the 11th CM of Karnataka. He also belongs to the strong Lingayat community and hails from Uttara Karnataka.
The meeting took place at Hotel Capitol in Bengaluru.
