Kasargod: A Maruti Omni fell into a 35-feet-ditch inside the compound of a house at Badoor village, Onibaagilu of Perla-Puttige road, leaving a woman and her son dead here on Wednesday, May 2. The driver losing control over the vehicle is said to have caused the accident.
The deceased are Beefathima (58) and Mohammad Sharif (38), residents of Perla. They died on the spot.
The accident occurred at around1.30 PM. The Omni van in which they were travelling lost control while taking a turn at Onibaagilu, due to which it fell into a steep ditch.
In the mishap, deceased Mohammad Sharif’s wife Khairunisa (28), children Shamna (10) and Shahar Banu (6) were severely injured.
They were rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru.
According to hospital sources, the condition of a child is critical.
When the nearby people heard the sound of a van crashing down, they immediately rushed to the spot and lifted out the people stuck in the van.
The mortal remains are kept in the Kasargod General Hospital mortuary. Once the post mortem is done, the bodies will be handed over to the family.
The family was travelling to attend the naming ceremony of Khairunisa’s brother at Mugu village of Puttige.
A case has been filed in the Badiyadka Police station.
Meanwhile, according to confirmed sources, Mohammad Sharif was working as a cashier in one of the hotels in Mumbai and had come down to vote during the Kasargod Lok Sabha polls.
He had to leave for Mumbai tomorrow.
