Kasargod: The Badiyadka Excise department has arrested a man hailing from Maharashtra for transporting hawala amount worth of Rs 80 Lakh in a KSRTC bus.
The arrested man is identified as Mayur Bharath Deshmukh (23) of Satara in Maharashtra. He was arrested on Friday, May 31 morning with the hawala money, while he was travelling from Bengaluru to Kasargod. The money was hidden in his shirt, trousers and jacket pockets.
Mayur, during interrogation, informed that he was supposed to deliver the money to a man called Sachin Kedar, in Kozhikode. He has also revealed that he had delivered Rs 80 Lakh hawala money to a jeweller in Kasargod, a month ago.
With the increase in smuggling of illegal liquor and ‘ganja’ from Karnataka into Kerala, the Excise department has been conducting raids and inspections on the vehicles coming to this state. The hawala money was seized during one such inspections on Friday morning.
The department is interrogating Mayur for more information.
