Kasargod: Flower traders from Mysuru and Hassan have reached Kasargod in order to sell flowers for the Onam festival. More than six types of flowers are being sold at the market including Chrysanthemums, Zinnias, Marigolds, Jasmine and "Rudraksha Malas".
Every year, there is a high demand for Marigolds, Chrysanthemums, Roses and Wild Jasmine flowers during the festival.
However, this year, the flower crops have failed to grow due to the heavy rains. The availability of only a few flowers, despite the high demand, has let traders down.
Since Onam is primarily celebrated by drawing flower "rangolis" or "Pookulams", there is always a high demand for colourful flowers.
The prices of these flowers have dropped in the last two years due to the low demand for them among Keralites. In addition to the price drop, the floods in 2018 and 2019 have negatively impacted horticulturists.
This year, the Onam festival began on September 1 and will go on till September 13. Thiru Onam will be held on September 11.
In the end, Keralites are coming forward to buy flowers since "Pookalam" is an integral part of the Onam flower festival celebrated in the region.
