Hubballi: A woman who was arrested on charges of stealing an eleven-day-old baby from KIMS hospital committed suicide in Dharwad central jail on Thursday.
Surekha Kawade(28), a housemaid had stolen the baby by posing a a nurse. She was arrested following a tip off by her neighbours.
Meanwhile her husband Prathap has alleged that harrassment by the police personnel forced her to end her life.
Pratap said, “I wanted to return the stolen baby to the parents, before the police arrested my wife. The police personnel have severely beaten my wife and her gold necklace went missing. This might have forced her to commit suicide as she was already depressed for not having a child.”
Surekha was sent to judicial custody after being produced before the court on Tuesday. KIMS Director Dr Dattatreya Bant said that action would be initiated against four security personnel for their lapses.
