Hubballi: A study done by the economics department of Gulbarga University has revealed that there are cases of new mothers taking the aid of midwives to kill their newly born girls soon after delivery in Konchavaram tanda (hamlet) of Chincholli taluk, Kalaburagi, due to poverty and social pressures.

Midwives follow the mother’s instruction and strangulate the infant girls to death soon after they are born and this heinous act has been going on here for many years now.

The shocking findings are from a study carried out by the University, as part of Kalaburagi district’s human development report under directives of the state government.

Chaya Degaonkar, HoD, department of economics, Gulbarga University, and member of Hyderabad Karnataka Regional Development Board, conducted a study for six months in Konchavaram hamlet to know the socio-economic status of villagers, education, lifestyle, health status, women’s education and other issues to prepare the report.

Sharing her findings she said, “We along with some of our research students chose this tanda for study after it shot into the limelight for girl child trafficking last year. Initially, we could not find anything and we just spent one or two months in taking details of health and education status of the people. Later, we stumbled upon incidents of mothers colluding with midwives to kill their infant girls immediately after delivery. We came across 3-4 such incidents in the tanda. We also got it confirmed from the neighbours.”
