Hubballi: A money lender allegedly assaulted a farmer and tied him to a coconut tree all night, until his wife found him on Friday July 25.

The victim identified as 63-year-old farmer Guddappa Chalavadi was found tied by his wife Lalitamma on Friday morning. She immediately called her family members, alerted other farmer leaders and police, informed a relative.

Guddappa then narrated the ordeal; he said that he was assaulted by a group of people as he had borrowed a sun of Rs 1800 from a local named Hassansab Tumminakatti and his father Mallikappa.

Guddappa, who was treated at a community health centre in Byadagi, confirmed he had taken a loan of Rs 1,800. “I promised them I’d return the money in 2-3 days but they didn’t listen to me,” he said.

He added that the father-son duo was not ready to release him despite requests by his wife and family members in the morning.

Reportedly, Guddappa Chalavadi owns 3 acres of land in Bisalalli village and had migrated to Byadagi due to drought and crop loss. He then along with his family worked as labourers, sold logs and grazed other’s cattle.

Byadagi PSI Girish BC said Hassansab, 30, was arrested and has been handed over to judicial custody.
