Hubballi: The Minister for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil has ordered an inquiry into the case of non-supply of required medicines at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and Hospital, even a month after tender was awarded.

The Minister asked the Director of KIMS D.D. Bant to initiate an inquiry, after the issue of shortage of medicines was raised during the review meeting held in Hubballi.

The Minister was shocked to hear from the hospital director that even after the work order, drugs had not been supplied to the hospital which serves an average of over 1,000 outpatients per day, besides hundreds of inpatients.

Only after finding out that the hospital is managing with only half of the required ventilators and available medical equipment, the minister asked the KIMS Director to submit a proposal for the purchase of all necessary equipment required urgently.

Responding to a query raised by a governing council member of KIMS, Medical Superintendent Shivappa Anurshettar said that the hospital had just 32 ventilators against the actual requirement of 80. When Dr. Bant told the Minister that they would require at least Rs. 20 crore for the purchase of necessary equipment, the Minister asked him to submit a list of equipment required.

The Minister also took exception to reports on absenteeism among doctors in the hospital after it was raised by MLC Basavaraj Horatti and other elected representatives, then the minister warned the director in this regard.
