Stinging eyes in swimming pool – Don’t blame chlorine, it can be urine!

Many experience bloodshot eyes after a swim. Conveniently, they blame the humble chlorine for the same and move on. But, a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that reason the bloodshot eyes could well be due to urine and other bloodily fluid that mix with chlorine to create chemical compound.

The report has stated that fresh air is important. The problem might be worse in indoor pools as there is poor air turnover. The report also revealed that the strong smell emanating from swimming pools is actually the smell given off by the contaminants. It also urged people to understand the fact that healthy pools do not emanate any smell.

Michele Hlavsa, chief of the CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program, advised people to buy a pool tester and stated that the level of chlorine in the swimming pool should be 1 to 3 ppm.

However, Hlavsa has also told not to get deterred by the report as swimming is an excellent way to get physical activity.

“That’s why it’s important for swimmers to protect themselves by not swallowing the water they swim in and to protect others by keeping feces and germs out of the pool by taking a pre-swim shower and not swimming when ill with diarrhea,” she said.
