Diabetes: What is food and what is not good!

It is said that once a patient becomes diabetic they cannot get rid of the condition but can only control it. So what are the measures to control diabetes? The doctors concerned suggest these day-to-day activities to control diabetes, which is stated below.

“People today become diabetic at a very young age. The reason behind this is poor choice of lifestyle, like substance abuse, binge drinking or eating, etc. Considering these facts, here are some food items a diabetic should avoid:

* Cakes
* Pastries
* Biscuits/ Cookies
* Sugar
* Ice cream
* Candies
* Chocolates
* Honey
* Glucose
* Jaggery
* Dry Fruits
* Cool Drinks and sugar added fruit juices
* Hot sugar added beverages
* Cavendish banana
* Sapodilla (chikoo)
* Jackfruit
* Mango
* Orange
* Potato
* Sweet Potato
* Bengal gram (Chickpea)
* Pumpkins
* Boiled Carrots
* Beetroots
* Ghee
* Butter
* Cheese
* Coconut Oil
* Paneer (Cottage Cheese)

A diabetic should also avoid processed bread, ‘Naan’, ‘Roti’ and noodles, and also avoid salt, smoking and drinking.

A limited amount of coconut, groundnut, almonds, cashewnuts, rice, millet, wheat is recommended. Fried food and milk products can be consumed in limit.

Apple, guava, wood apple, pomegranate, water melon, few grapes, gooseberries can be consumed on a daily basis.

Egg white, fish, skinned out chicken, green vegetables can also be consumed.

Diabetics can consume butter milk, lemonade (without sugar), soda, sprouted beans and fibre rich food.

Avoid fasting and overeating. Eat little at regular intervals.

Too much of sweating, weakness, blurred vision, too much of hunger, irregular heart beat, all these are indications of low sugar level. In such cases, a glass of water with 5 spoons of sugar or glucose should be consumed.

Diabetes can be controlled by the day-to-day food habits, say doctors.
