Yettinahole project: Work may slow down due to rain

Hassan: The on-going work regarding Yettinahole project in Sakaleshpur is likely to become slow or come to an abrupt halt with the onset of monsoon.

Five out of eight weirs along with three pump houses are being constructed. A 15-km pipeline has also been laid. But with the rains, the construction of weirs and pipeline work is looking a difficult task.

According to R Cheluvaraju, Chief Engineer, Karnataka Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (KNNL), it will be difficult to take up major works due to rain in the next three to four months.

“Other works related to preparations for the conveyance segment, land acquisition will go on as planned,” he said.

KNNL and the private agency which has bagged the contract, are working in the land taken through an agreement with the landowner.

The Centre has approved the diversion of forest land. The project requires 18.3 hectares of forest land and 258 acres of private land. The State government has appointed a land acquisition officer to check the social impact analysis for the acquisition of the revenue land.

With the work of laying power lines in progress, the sanction for the supply of power required for the project was also approved. There will be earth excavation works to build canals as well for which said the estimation for first 50 km of conveyance is being done, said Cheluvaraju.

The approval of the review committee is awaited after which tenders would be invited for work.

KNNL has spent over Rs 1,700 crore on the work at the site. The fight by environmentalists against the project in the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is still going on. The petitioners are unhappy that the NGT has not yet pronounced the final order in regards to the controversial project.
