Hassan: In an uncommon gesture of gratitude, this temple in the Hassan district chooses to honour former Deputy Commissioner Rohini Sindhuri by carrying out a special puja in her name every week. According to a report by DHNS, the Virupaksheswara temple at Doddabasadi Road reportedly conducts a holy ritual to bless Sindhuri and her family every Monday.
The temple, which dates back to 913 AD, is situated at the heart of the city. It can be recalled that the temple had fallen into a state of neglect and government authorities had turned a blind eye to it. However, during her tenure as DC, Sindhuri managed to allocate funds so that the dilapidated temple could be renovated. Based on the head priest's appeal, Sindhuri directed a total sum of Rs 30 lakhs to ensure that the temple had adequate amenities such as power supply and water.
Speaking to DHNS, temple priest HN Nagabushan said, "Rohini Sindhuri helped in developing the temple. Hence, Rudrabhishekha is being conducted every Monday, in her family's name."
But the temple's predicaments are far from over. In a delightful coincidence, the idol of Lord Shiva housed in the inner sanctum of the temple used to be bathed in natural sunlight every Shivaratri. This phenomenon stopped taking place when a newly-built structure (constructed on encroached land) obstructed the sun rays. Sindhuri was reportedly attempting to clear the encroachment before she was transferred.
Commenting on the issue, the temple priest said, "Rohini tried to clear the encroachment of the temple land, but she was transferred. No one has taken any initiative after that, in this regard."
The Virupaksheswara temple also houses a few ancient sculptures and is a historically-significant site as attested by several historians.
