Hassan: Gollarahatti in Arasikere is one village where girls had to suffer due to superstitious beliefs relating to menstruation. Here, for generations, every menstruating woman was forced to stay outside village.

A local news channel had carried an exclusive report on this particular practice. Now the health department has distributed sanitary napkins to the women of the village.

Here the worst sufferers are young girls who compulsorily need to spend a few days away from school and college when they are menstruating even if it means they miss their examinations. Those who endorse such a practice are very strict about not touching a woman when she is considered ‘unclean’. The menstruating women and girls take shelter in a bus stand far away outside the village.

It is the elderly and the religious minded including the priests who strongly endorse this practice. It is upto the state to come up with policy measures to bring change in this village and put an end to these superstitions.
