After community hall, Sigaranahalli Dalits now enter Temple

Hassan: In a historic move, the Dalits of Sigaranahalli in Holenarasipura, who have been fighting for equal rights, entered the Basaveshwara Temple on Sunday at 10 am and offered prayers.

However, none from the upper communities visited the temple on Sunday after 30 Dalits broke the long-held caste taboo.

The retaliation from the Dalits here began about eight-months ago, when men from upper castes imposed fine on four Dalit women for entered the temple.

After this incident, the district administration had locked the temple as the “upper castes” felt that the temple had become “impure” with the entry of Dalits. Purification rituals were conducted on March 25 before the annual Durga Parameshwari festival.

The behaviour of the upper castes had provoked the Dalits who then started fighting for entry into the temple as well as a community hall in the village. The Dalits had earlier entered the community hall last week, while the upper caste members remained silent.

On Saturday, the district administration took charge of the temple and as per Somanna, deputy tahsildar of Halekote hobli, the process of handing over the temple to the Muzrai Department will be taken up soon.

Later, it was announced that from Sunday the temple would be open between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. every day.

The police had been deployed in the village to avoid any untoward incident.
