Kalaburgi: An investigation into an alleged case of ‘Love Jihad’ involving a 25-year-old Hindu woman, led the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to raid the house of Irshadullah Khan, the deputy commissioner of the commercial tax department in Kalaburgi. It is learnt that the raid was conducted on June 6 and 7.
The 25-year-old woman was a student at a college in Bengaluru, where she met a Muslim man, a fellow student from Kerala, and fell in love. The two were wedded and the woman was allegedly forced to convert to Islam, following which she was taken to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, where the husband’s family resides.
It is alleged that the woman escaped from Saudi Arabi and returned to her parents. The woman then filed a complaint with the Kerala police once in January in which she alleged that she was forced to convert and also alleged that there were plans to send her to Syria to join the Islamic State. She also alleged that she was sexually harassed by others while she was residing in Saudi.
The case was handed over to the NIA as the Islamic State was mentioned in the complaint, and the woman’s husband was arrested at the Chennai International Airport upon his arrival from Saudi Arabi. Nine people, four from Bengaluru, have been named by the NIA in the case.
It is reported that the NIA has questioned the wife, who is an engineer, as well as other members of the family. Irshadullah’s wife allegedly taught the complainant and had contact with her.
The Agency has confiscated eight laptops, 12 cell phones and several SIM cards, which have been handed over to the Forensic Science Laboratory and are presently being analysed.
The NIA has said that, though the woman had not stayed at the officer’s house, she frequently visited the place for Islamic studies upon her husband’s insistence.
