Kalaburagi: While the farmers in the state capital were being beaten up by the police during a protest march on Thursday, a farmer’s daughter in far away Kalaburagi made her father proud by bagging the highest number of gold medals at the 34th annual convocation of the Gulbarga University (GU).
Shivabasamma (22) took home eight medals after scoring highest marks in MA Kannada and as she walked up the stage, her parents had a look of great contentment for all the hardships that they faced seemed to have been paid off.
He father Shivabasappa is a small time farmer from Machnoor village in Raichur who along with his wife migrated to Bengaluru during every non-harvest season or during the drought to work as daily wage workers.
Even as his daughter was supposed to achieve this rare feat this year, Shivabasappa and his wife had worked as construction workers, even this year in Bengaluru to make their both ends meet.
Like a humble daughter, Shivabasamma gave all the credit for her success to her parents.
While her two older sisters couldn’t even finish schooling, a determined Shivabasamma didn’t let poverty come in the way of her aspirations. Her next goal: to do research and become a college lecturer.
