Kalaburagi: A village man recently donated his mother’s body to a private medical college in Kalaburagi, however, this was not done out of his love for science, but out of helplessness.

The incident has been reported from the Bhankur village (population of 15,000) of the Shahabad taluk, Kalaburugi district.

Lakshikantha Kandagol had no choice but to donate his mother’s body to a private medical college in Kalaburagi, as he did not own any land and there was no more space in his village to bury his mother, Subhadramma Kandagol (76), who died of age-related illnesses on Friday morning.

Lakshikantha and his family belong to the Lingayat community and according to the practices of this community, the dead are buried and not burned.

Eranna Kargil, a local social activist informed that around 40 families in the village have now decided to donate bodies to the hospital due to the shortage of land. “We are helpless. There is no land available in the village to build a burial ground,” he said.
