Train derails in Koppal, no casualties

Koppal: A train running between Hyderabad and Kolhapur derailed near Hulugi village in Koppal taluk on Monday. However, no one was injured in the accident.

The train was on its way to Hospet from Munirabad when the accident occurred. Railway sources said that the driver was not informed about the rail work that had been taken up along the track.

When the speeding train approached the spot where the work was taking place, eight labourers abandoned their equipment on the track and fled.

An iron rod left behind derailed the train, the sources said. “The train had just crossed a bridge over the Tungabhadra river. Had the accident taken place over the bridge, casualties would have been very high. The river is in spate as northern parts of Karnataka have received very heavy rainfall over the last few weeks,” railway sources said.

Passengers from the derailed train were taken back to Hospet with the help of another engine.

Train services resumed two hours after the accident after railway engineers visited the spot and declared the track safe.
