Mumbai: An official at the immigration counter at Mumbai’s international airport allegedly humiliated a man from Tamil Nadu for “not knowing Hindi”. The man alleged in a tweet that he was insulted by an officer at the immigration desk for “knowing only Tamil and English and NOT Hindi” and was also denied immigration. Following this, the immigration department has initiated an investigation against the officer in question, Hindustan Times reported.

The man, identified as Abraham Samuel, took to Twitter on Tuesday to narrate his ordeal, claiming that the immigration officer at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s Counter 33 did not stop his “disgraceful speech” even after he had complained to his superiors. Samuel wrote in a series of tweets, “The only reason I left was because my flight was scheduled to be boarded at 1 AM. Otherwise I would have stayed to lodge a formal complaint against this nincampoop! How do idiots like him make way into the Indian government? (sic)”

Tagging the official Twitter accounts of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Ministry of External Affairs, Samuel further wrote, “He is a disgrace! @SushmaSwaraj @MEAIndia (sic),” Samuel said in one of his tweets tagging the foreign minister and the external affairs ministry.” He further said, “No one in India should be denied immigration for not knowing hindi! Such a disgraceful and arrogant behavior by this immigration officer in counter 33 at Mumbai CST! Hope this is the last instance of this in India (sic)!”

Meanwhile, a senior immigration official told the daily that Samuel had cleared the immigration in just four minutes. The erring officer has also been taken off duty temporarily, the senior official said.

“We regret that such an incident took place at Mumbai airport. The said officer who has been taken off the counter, pending investigation, will be given soft skill training and his counselling will be done,” another official said.
