A 61-year-old woman has become the talk of the internet after giving birth to her own granddaughter in Nebraska, US. Cecil Eledge turned surrogate for her gay son and his husband. On Monday, she gave birth to a healthy girl.

As reported by Daily Mail, Matthew Eledge and his husband Elliot Dougherty were considering IVF as an option. But when Matthew’s mother volunteered to become the surrogate mother, the couple was pleasantly surprised.

However, Cecil had last given birth in 1989 and had undergone menopause 10 years ago. But she told Matthew and Elliot that she loved being pregnant and would ‘do it again in a heartbeat’.

So, when Matthew shared his mother’s idea with a reproductive endocrinologist, he said there was a good chance of Cecil becoming pregnant again. After a series of tests, the doctors confirmed that Cecile is in remarkable shape to carry a baby for 9 months.

The eggs for fertilisation were offered by Elliot’s 26-year-old sister, Lea Yribe, who had just given birth to her second child.

“She has lower blood-pressure than all of us [her children] and she’s 61. I don’t know how to describe her; she’s remarkable. I have such deep respect for her and am so gracious that even as a grown adult she continues to go above and beyond for me,” Matthew told DailyMail.

The doctors used Matthew’s sperm and implanted several fertilised eggs in Cecil’s uterus. Much to the surprise of doctors and family members, Cecil became pregnant on the first attempt.

After 9 months of morning sickness and a lot of care from her son and his husband, Cecile gave birth to a healthy baby girl on April 1, 2018.

The family named her Uma.

The day of delivery was beautifully captured by photographer Ariel Panowicz. She later shared the emotional shots on Instagram.

“She said throughout the whole process that she didn’t see Uma as her baby, she saw it as her grandbaby,” Matthew told DailyMail.
