Bangalore: Routed in the Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka, where it won only nine of 28 seats, Congress in the state has chalked out a one year roadmap to galvanise party and the government to build coordination between them to give good governance for the next five years.
“We discussed our Lok Sabha debacle and chalked out a road map to galvanise party cadres and the state government. We are trying to build some coordination between government and the party to give good and clean governance for the next five years, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President G Parameshwara told reporters here.
He said that before going to the polls, people should not question the party on failing to fulfill promises. The KPCC president said the party planned to hold the first state-level Congress convention in Karnataka to showcase its history and achievements till date. “We have sent the proposal to the All Indian Congress Committee for approval to hold first-of-its-kind three-day state-level convention,” he said.
If approved, the party would hold the convention in October this year in which national leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi would be invited, Parameshwara said. The convention would highlight the history of Congress, its achievements and character of the party to members, he said. KPCC also plans to host programmes to observe Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and ‘Indira Gandhi Jayanti’ on November 19, he said.
“We will conduct Gandhi Jayanti in all districts to spread the Gandhian ideas which are relevant to society,” he said. The party will also hold padyatara in 124 assembly constituencies from October this year to January 2015, he said, adding KPCC would hold organisational polls that month.
To a query, Parameshwara said he is ready to abide by the party’s decision to make him Deputy Chief Minister.
“There is a demand from some quarters within the party to see me as Deputy Chief Minister, but the decision is left to AICC. I would abide by their decision if any,” he said. He also said KPCC convened a two-day meeting to introspect the party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls.
The meeting, which analysed factors which worked against the party in the elections, was attended by party’s Karnataka incharge and AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, MLAs, MPs, and defeated candidates in the Assembly and Lok Sabha polls, Parameshwara said.
The meeting was convened in the wake of complaints that some leaders were working against the party, resulting in Congress winning only nine out of 28 seats in the LS polls, he said.
“We have given names of those guilty of being involved in anti-party activities during the polls to the party’s disciplinary committee. Based on its report we will take action or suspend the members,” he said.
