Mangaluru: The Maravoor vented dam which was constructed across the Phalguni river in Maravoor village, in order to provide drinking water to several villages is polluted now. The reason-waste disposal into the river by the localites.

The residents of 14 villages Bajpe, Jokatte, Malavoor, Kenjar, Permude, Kutthethur, Moodushedde, Padushedde, Thenka Ekkar, Badaga Ekkar, Bala, Kalavar, Soorinje and Delanthabettu have been receiving water from this dam. Though the water in the dam was clean till the last year, it is now contaminated with plastic carry bags, bottles including that of liquor are seen floating in the river.

It may be recalled that the downstream of this dam was contaminated due to the alleged release of industrial effluents into the Phalguni river and the water had turned black two years ago affecting the marine life as well. Several cattle also died after consuming water from the river. The nearby open wells also turned black due to the same reason. The contamination was cleared only after the onset of monsoon. Now again, the people are worried that the water will be polluted again.

When contacted, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr. Selvamani R told newskarnataka.com that he would ask the officials concerned to visit the dam and check. He said, “I will take appropriate measures to ensure none would discharge waste into the river. People need not panic about contamination as the drinking water is being distributed only after checking for purity.”

Meanwhile, Selvamani asked the public not to dump waste or any garbage into the river Phalguni as it is catering to the drinking water needs of around 14 villages. People should behave like responsible citizens, he said.

A local resident Puneeth told newskarnataka.com that police patrolling in the vicinity of the vented dam is a must citing that miscreants throw liquor bottles and plastic bottles to the river.

“Strict action should be taken against those who dump waste into the flowing river. Stringent action should be taken against the industries which discharge untreated water to the river”, he stressed.
