Transfers withheld: Teachers heave a sigh of relief

Mangaluru: Following widespread opposition by the teachers, the Department of Public Instruction has postponed the decision of transferring the teachers who are working in the same schools for more than 10 years. The teachers being affected by this order, are now heaving a sigh of relief.

Earlier, the Government of Karnataka had decided to transfer teachers who are working for more than 10 years in the same schools, located in taluk centres to rural schools. This decision was taken as per the Karnataka State Civil Services ( Regulation of transfer of teachers) (Amendment) Act 2017.

If the department would go ahead with this decision, those teachers who are working in a particular primary, high school and pre-university college for more than 10 years need to go to other schools or colleges located in rural areas. As it is the middle of the academic year now, teachers will be subjected to many problems including finding accommodation in their transferred areas.

An indirect effect on the education of students
When the teachers received this information, they passed it on to others, which resulted in strong opposition from the teaching fraternity. They termed the decision as unscientific claiming that transferring the teachers in the middle of the academic year would indirectly affect the education of students as well.

”If the department really wants to transfer us for a good cause, they should have taken the decision during the beginning of the academic year and not in the middle”, they opined.

Later, a group of teachers who are affected by this order listed out the demerits of the sudden transfer and submitted it to the officials in the Public Instruction department and also to the education minister. This led the department to change its decision.

Transfer procedures postponed-DDPI
The Dakshina Kannada District Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI), Y Shivaramaiah when contacted, informed that the decision of transferring the teachers had been postponed. “It was the decision of the government to postpone the transferring procedure and the process has been withheld”, he clarified.
