Karnataka, known as Karunadu in the ancient times, has a fascinating history that goes back to 1200 BC. Karnataka has been ruled over by several dynasties, each adding its own culture and values to the place. Dynasties such as the Mauryas, Nandas, Badami Chalukyas, Bahmanis, and the Wodeyars of Mysore have ruled different parts of Karnataka at various points in time. These historic cities are home to some phenomenal architectural work in the form of forts, royal palaces, temples, etc.

Mysore
Mysore or Mysuru, is considered one of the most enchanting cities in Southern India. It has earned itself this distinction with the magnificent buildings and monuments alongside its glittering royal heritage. Mysore is also renowned for its rich tradition, an array of stores selling a wide range of spices, and incense stalls. Mysore is also credited as a centre for Ashtanga yoga with several schools attracting visitors from far and wide. The Brindavan Gardens on the periphery of Mysore and the illuminated dancing fountains are a great attraction that should not be missed. Cabs from Bangalore to Mysore are readily available from the airport at fixed prices to easily reach the remarkable city.

Belur
Situated on the banks of the Yagachi River, Belur can be reached within four hours when you book car rentals in Bangalore. Belur is renowned for its temples and is often referred to as ‘Banaras of the South’. Though Halebidu is about 16 km from Belur, the two towns are referred to as Belur-Halebidu as if they were one. The temples at both the villages were built by the famous architect Jakkanna Acharya, and the carvings depicting Hindu mythology are of particular interest to visitors. The history of Belur dates back to the 12th century with a series of pillars in different designs adding to the attractions here.

Halebidu
Dwarasamudra or ‘Gateway to the sea’ is another name for Halebidu which is located in the Hassan district of Karnataka. Hassan has her own fame, having served as the capital city of the Hoysala Empire which flourished for over 150 years. Literally translated, Hale means ‘old’ while Beedu means ‘a layout or place for human dwelling.’ In the early 14th century, Halebidu was attacked by the forces of Malik Kafur that lead to eventual fall of the empire. Visitors interested in archaeology will find Halebidu quite interesting.

Hampi
Hampi, a present-day UNESCO world heritage site, is a testament to multiple rulers who have ruled over Karnataka. Hampi was ruled by the Sangama, Saluva, Tuluva and Aravidu dynasties with each building its own new monument. During the period of Achyutadevaraya and Krishnadevaraya, the Vijayanagar Empire scaled new heights extending from Cuttack in the East to Goa on the Western coast, and Raichur in the North to the Indian Ocean in the south, making it one of the largest Hindu kingdoms at the time. Hampi being the capital city, grew leaps and bounds in terms of trade, development, architecture etc. The Virupaksha Temple is the most famous site in Hampi as it is believed that Lord Shiva married Parvati in this temple.

Aihole
Aihole sits on the banks of the Malaprabha River in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka state. It was the capital of the Chalukyan dynasty for a brief period. Aihole is famous for the Hindu rock architecture. Some 125 temples in 22 groups can be seen all over this village and its proximate fields. Most of these temples have their history dating back to the 6th and 8th centuries. It is believed that artisans of the Chalukya Empire were testing different temple designs in Aihole. You can also visit the nearby towns of Badami and Pattadakkal which are home to similar architectural marvels by simply hiring cabs from Savaari Car Rentals. The three towns together depict the magnanimous glory of the bygone era.
